Screen printing is something that's been around for a very long time - we can track primitive forms of this ancient art to china where early prints date back as early as 960AD.

It wasn't until the late 1700's though that Screen Printing was introduced to Western Europe, but it was sadly never accepted until the introduction of a silk mesh which brought prices down and made the concept profitable.

Now, screen printing is used widely across a variety of businesses and, because of its flexibility, makes it possible print on a wide range of products from Posters and Hats, to T-Shirts, CD's and DVD's.

So here's the important bit, how does screen printing work?

Well the process is fairly simple if you have the right equipment. Essentially a mesh containing lots a tiny holes is used to produce a mask, or in the printing world "screen". A mask is created on the screen by coating the mesh in something called "substrate". Ink can't pass through the substrate but can pass freely through the areas of the mesh that are not blocked - and it's this principal that allows us to pass ink onto the product we want to print on to produce the desired design.

Lying the mesh (or screen) on top of a product, we then take a roller (or squeegee) and force the ink through the tiny holes on to the product. Once complete, the Ink is then placed through a heat source to dry the ink so it hardens and can be washed.

If the design for the product contains more than one colour, the process is repeated using a different screen and coloured ink. The difficulty here is ensuring that the next screen correctly lines up with the previous screen on the product each time so that finished multi-coloured print looks as it was intended to.

At Creative Apparel we use expensive machines that contain several arms, each holding a separate coloured screen. This ensures that all the screens stay in the right place as each product gets automatically transferred under the appropriate position under each arm/screen and printed. This automated method of printing allows us to screen print a whopping 20,000 items each day!

So there you have it, that’s how we screen print.

Join us next month as we tell you all about how we embroider.

Are you wearing a T-Shirt right now? Chances are that it would have started life as a small plant called a Gossypium. Found in hot climates, the Gossypium grows a unique fibre around the seed pod that we call Cotton. From white to a greyish yellow, the fibre is harvested, and then spun into a thread or yarn and used to make cotton fabric that we then use for clothing.

Growing cotton is not easy, it can take up 200 days, lots of sunny, warm weather and heaps of dedication. Normally cotton comes from countries that lie on the equator in tropical or semi tropical climates. Harvesting Cotton plants usually take place in early fall, however in some countries, harvesting takes place a little sooner due to late summer insects that can ruin the Gossypium.

When the fibre seeds are picked, they are placed through a series of rollers that allow the fibre to get through yet small enough to stop the seeds from passing, resulting in raw fibre that we call cotton lint. This lint is then passed through pipes and compressed into bales, ready for market. These bales are usually a standard size of around 55 inches tall, 28 inches wide, and 21 inches thick. A bale of this size contains enough cotton to produce 325 pairs of denim jeans.

To get to this stage of production, cotton mills receive these cotton lint bales and process them to produce yarn. Yarn is fibres twisted into threads used for weaving and knitting. Different forms of weaving and knitting are then used to produce different styles of clothing, from t-shirts and jeans to sweaters and sportswear.

So next time you put on a hoodie, think of the huge journey your cotton took just to keep you warm!

Phase three will be started in a few months time and that will involve us adding special finctionality that will allow you to design your own workwear as well as the functionality to allow you upload you own artwork that will be sent sent straight to our printers, printed and delivered the next day! Another year and another Trade Only National Show! We were there bright and early on the 27th January 2010 at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry to set up our stand which this year was C20.

Creative Apparel went all out this year and decided to give away iPods to all visitors that were lucky enough to pick out a wining business card. All they had to do was hold their chosen business card towards a special webcam that was capable of showing 3 dimensional images of things that arn't (in reality) there. The webcam informed the user on whether or not their card was a winner!

This advanced technology is known as Augmented Reality so if you want to check out just how advanced it can get, take a look at this You Tube link - All the models clothes didn't actually excist at all, they were all generated live on-the-fly as the video was filmed!

Anyway, the show was a huge success as we met all our old friends and introduced ourselves to some very exciting new ones! So we just want to say a huge thank you to all the people that supported us this year, hopefully see you again next year!
